Bears could join Bills in squeezing 10 million tight ends for pay cut

This offseason, the have a ton of momentum to build a Super Bowl contender. After coming up short in the NFC Divisional round to the , likely the second-best team in the NFL, the Bears have the momentum. But thanks to being in the red with their cap space, the Bears are going to have to make some difficult decisions. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to clear cap space. One of those involves veteran tight end Cole Kmet. believes that the Bears, along with the and Dawson Knox, will look to get their tight end to take a pay cut down from their $10 million APY deal in 2026. Bears Denzel Okafor Jersey believed to be trying to force Cole Kmet into a pay cut "The Bears and Bills probably want their respective veterans back," Barnwell writes, "but they'll try to squeeze at least a modest pay cut out of them, given that neither has been productive enough to earn that same sort of money if they hit the open market." Kmet is in the middle of a $50 million contract over four years. Currently, he has two years left, with cap hits of $11.6 million in each of the next two years. If the Bears cut him this offseason, they will save $5 million in cap space and another $8.4 million in 2027. Instead of simply cutting him and having Kmet join a new team, a restructured deal in the form of a pay cut could make sense. After putting up 347 yards and two touchdowns on 30 receptions this past season, and with Colston Loveland emerging as a star at tight end, the Bears have little incentive to hold onto Kmet at his current price tag. More : Most teams won't spend that much on Kmet either. So, instead of the Bears cutting him and Kmet being out some money while trying to find a new team, the Bears could instead convince him to take a le ser deal for the next few seasons. While Kmet is still worth a few million, spending over $10 million is hard to justify for a backup tight end. The Bills with Knox are in the same boat. If the Bears and Bills can renegotiate the contracts of Knox and Kmet down to a more palatable level, then they'd be able to keep their veteran tight ends on much more reasonable deals. Convincing Kmet and Knox to take pay cuts will be difficult, but with both unlikely to land as good a deal in free agency, the Bears and Bills might be able to get their veteran backup tight ends back on cheaper deals in 2026.
